Transparent media façades

Transparent LED media façade: Virginia Commonwealth University

VCU James Branch Cabell Library, Richmond, USA

A transparent media façade made from GKD MEDIAMESH (stainless steel mesh with integrated LED rows) graces the James Branch Cabell Library of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, America. The media façade is the university's new and attractive calling card and also serves as effective solar protection and glare protection on the façade.

Around 18,000 bright pixels set at vertical intervals of 40 mm and horizontal intervals of 50 mm ensure high-contrast reproduction of animations and films on a display area of 37 m² – even in daylight. In addition to the visual display quality, the media façade installed over two floors impresses with its energy efficiency. The MEDIAMESH screen consumes 80 percent less energy than conventional LED displays. Thanks to its 60-percent mesh transparency, the rooms behind it can still be fully used and the view from inside to outdoors remains unobstructed – as does the natural daylight entering the building. At the same time, the transparent LED media façade made from weather-resistant stainless steel mesh offers the best glare and solar protection, thereby increasing the quality of the environment in the university library.

The media façade was installed by GKD USA. The woven screen was fixed in place using round bars and eyebolts.
